When Williamwood High School contacted Nortek Group, they were looking for a straightforward but essential improvement to their Design & Technology workshop: replacing a number of ageing woodworking benches that were no longer suitable for continued classroom use.

The school’s existing benches were of traditional all-timber construction and, after only a few years of heavy use, had begun to work themselves loose. The constant forces associated with practical woodworking activities had gradually affected their stability, leaving the benches increasingly unsuitable for a busy secondary school workshop.

It is a problem we regularly see in practical learning environments. D&T furniture is subjected to far greater stresses than standard classroom furniture, with benches expected to withstand repeated sawing, planing, drilling, clamping and general workshop use day after day.

Williamwood High School therefore needed more than a simple replacement. They needed a robust, long-term solution that would improve safety, provide a stable working platform for pupils and deliver better value over the lifetime of the furniture.

In a Design & Technology classroom, the workbench is one of the most important pieces of equipment in the room.

Unlike a conventional classroom desk, woodworking benches need to withstand significant lateral and downward forces while remaining stable and secure.
