The most widely used school chair in UK classrooms. Stackable school chairs with tubular steel frames and polypropylene shells combine durability, easy storage, and straightforward cleaning. One-piece moulded polypropylene school chairs have no separate shell or frame fixings, making them exceptionally robust and easy to clean. Particularly popular in primary schools for their simplicity and resistance to damage. The solid moulded construction means there are no joints to loosen or edges to chip, which makes them one of the most durable choices for high-use environments. Available in multiple sizes and colours.
Skid base chairs use a continuous curved frame rather than four individual legs, giving a slight forward tilt that naturally encourages better posture. The absence of rear legs also removes the tipping risk associated with standard 4-leg frames, making them a popular choice where safety is a priority. School chair sizes: the BS EN 1729 guide.
Choosing the correct chair size is one of the most important decisions when specifying school seating. BS EN 1729 is the British and European standard that defines school chair and table heights based on the height of the user. Getting the size right means pupils can sit with feet flat on the floor and knees at a natural right angle. Getting it wrong causes discomfort, poor posture, and distraction.
Most primary classrooms use a mix of size 2, 3, and 4 chairs to accommodate the spread of pupil heights across a year group. Secondary classrooms typically use size 5 and 6. If you are unsure of the right size split for your school, our team can advise based on your year groups.

The standard defines six size marks, each corresponding to a range of user heights and an approximate age group:
Size 1 (seat height 260mm):
for pupils up to 119cm tall, typically aged 3 to 4
for pupils up to 119cm tall, typically aged 3 to 4
Size 2 (seat height 310mm):
for pupils 119 to 133cm tall, typically aged 4 to 6
for pupils 119 to 133cm tall, typically aged 4 to 6
Size 3 (seat height 350mm):

What to look for when buying school chairs.
Not all school chairs are built to the same standard, and the differences become clear within the first year of use in a busy classroom. Here are the key things to check before specifying.
Fully welded tubular steel frames are significantly more durable than frames assembled with bolt-together fixings, which loosen over time with daily stacking, unstacking, and movement. Powder-coated finishes resist chipping and scratching in a way that painted frames do not. All Nortek school chairs use fully welded steel frames and are powder-coated as standard.
School chairs are stacked and unstacked multiple times every day. Look for chairs rated to stack at least eight to ten high, with moulded stacking points that prevent shells from scratching. Chairs that cannot stack cleanly are a source of daily frustration for teachers and site staff. Consider how stacked chairs will be stored and whether your classroom has appropriate space for a stacking trolley.
Polypropylene seats are the most practical choice for the majority of school classrooms. They wipe clean easily, do not absorb spills or odours, which makes them a much more practical choice than upholstered seats in high-use classroom environments. Upholstered chairs offer more comfort for longer periods of sitting and are a good choice for sixth form common rooms, staff areas, or library spaces.
Chair sizing and table height are directly related under BS EN 1729. A size 4 chair should be paired with a table of the correct corresponding height for the posture benefits to be realised.
