A Cutting Edge Sustainable Learning Facility

In 2025, Nortek Group was proud to support its dealer, AES, with the supply and installation of a complete specialist electronics classroom at the brand-new Dunfermline City Campus (DCC). The project included a full suite of our industry-leading electronics benches alongside Mains Power Low Voltage (MPLV) power trunking, helping to create a modern, high-performance teaching environment for practical electronics learning.

As one of the most ambitious education developments in Scotland in recent years, Dunfermline City Campus has been designed to deliver an exceptional student experience across a wide variety of subjects. With its cutting-edge facilities, forward-thinking design and strong sustainability credentials, the campus is already setting a new standard for further education environments.

A major investment in modern learning

Dunfermline City Campus represents a significant investment in the future of education. Designed to meet Scotland’s Net Zero Public Sector Building targets, the new campus uses the latest eco-conscious construction methods and building technologies.

Wherever possible, recycled materials were specified to reduce the use of virgin products, while technologies such as solar panels and air source heat pumps help to support efficient heating and cooling throughout the building. Combined with a high EPC rating, the result is a campus built with both performance and sustainability in mind.

Sustainability also plays an important role in equipment procurement. Nortek Group products are designed and manufactured with longevity in mind, because durable, high-quality furniture offers a more sustainable solution over the long term. Wherever possible, products are designed to be repaired, refurbished or recycled at the end of their working life, helping to reduce waste and support more responsible purchasing decisions. The vast majority of Nortek Group components are manufactured from steel or aluminium rather than plastic, giving customers a robust, long-lasting product while also supporting more environmentally conscious buying choices.

The development has also achieved an impressively low embodied carbon footprint, underlining the project team’s commitment to responsible design and construction. For students and staff alike, the result is a learning environment that is not only fit for today, but built for the future.

A specialist electronics classroom fit-out

Nortek Group was selected to supply and install a complete package of electronics assembly benches with integrated MPLV power trunking and fume extraction. The goal was to create a classroom that would allow students to comfortably build, test and evaluate electronic equipment in a safe, practical and well-organised workspace.

Each workstation was designed to provide a stable and durable working area with excellent lighting, accessible power provision and the functionality required for detailed technical tasks. In addition to the core benching and trunking solution, Nortek Group also supplied two custom variations of the General Mobile Machine Bench, tailored to the specific needs of the space.

This combination of standard and bespoke equipment ensured the classroom could support a wide range of teaching activities while maintaining a consistent, professional finish throughout.

Designed for practical learning

Electronics teaching spaces need to do more than simply look the part. They must support concentration, safety, visibility and ease of use, while also standing up to the demands of daily practical work.

At Dunfermline City Campus, the installed solution was designed around exactly those priorities. The integrated power trunking system gave students and tutors easy access to essential services, while the built-in fume extraction supported safe working during soldering and electronics assembly tasks.

Overhead light frames (inspired by our Industrial Furniture range) were wired into switches mounted on the front of the trunking, ensuring that each workstation benefits from ample illumination when working on intricate components and detailed circuit-based tasks. This attention to usability helps create a workspace that feels intuitive, efficient and ready for real-world technical training.

Bespoke solutions for specialist requirements

One of the standout features of the project was a bespoke workstation fitted with 110V industrial 3 Phase outlets. This was specified by AES to support the building and testing of commercial-grade equipment more commonly found on building sites and in manufacturing environments.

This custom variation of Nortek Group’s MPLV power trunking ensured that the classroom could cater for a broader range of electronics work, giving students valuable exposure to equipment and working practices they may encounter in industry. It also highlights Nortek Group’s ability to adapt standard product ranges into tailored solutions for specialist teaching spaces.

For colleges, universities and training providers, that flexibility can make a major difference when designing classrooms that need to serve multiple disciplines or evolving course requirements.

Fast, efficient installation

The installation programme was delivered by the Nortek Group Specialist Installations Team. With six full runs of back-to-back benches required, the project demanded careful coordination, efficient on-site working and a high level of attention to detail.

The full installation was completed within just three days. During that time, the team laid out the benches, levelled and bolted them together, wired the power trunking, and installed and sealed the fume extraction system. The overhead lighting elements were also connected and tested as part of the process.

The speed and efficiency of the installation helped ensure the new classroom was ready for use without unnecessary delays, while the finished result delivered the robust, practical and professional standard expected from a flagship education project.
